PORTO: ROMANESQUE AND MEDIEVAL
Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The Middle Ages defined its body and the riverfront its soul.
Highlights:
Church of Santa Clara
Construction dates from the first half of the 15th century. The church keeps its original gothic structure and its interior walls are lined with gilded woodcarvings.
City Wall (Fernandina)
In 1336 construction began on a second ring of defensive walls, which were to be completed in 1376.
The Funicular of Guindais
From the Batalha down to the Ribeira (riverside) and back, overlooking the Douro and the D. Luiz Bridge.
Barredo Tower
Dated from 13th century, it stands as the oldest monument of civil architecture from the medieval period.
Coal Wicket
This is the only surviving door from the 14th century wall. It was used to storage coal and connected the Ribeira quay to Fonte Taurina Street.
The Prince's House (Casa do Infante)
According to legend, this building was the birthplace of Prince Henry the Navigator.
Cathedral and Medieval Tower
Dated from the 13th century, the cathedral still bears the austerity of the Romanesque style. The Medieval Tower was discovered during the demolition of the cathedral’s churchyard. What we see today is a reconstruction of the original, placed 15 metres from its previous location.

PORTO ACCORDING TO NICOLAU NASONI
Nicolau Nasoni (1691-1773) was an Italian artist, formed in Siena and in Rome, who found in Porto his city of choice. His artistry as an architect is especially revealed in his work with granite, in buildings such as:
Freixo Palace and Pousada
A remarkable monument from the Portuguese civil baroque period, this palace was converted into a hotel, preserving the entire façade of its buildings.
Church of Misericórdia
Dated from 1750, the church is of great visual impact, displaying early traces of the then new Rococo decorative grammar.
Church of Santo Ildefonso
Unlike the façade, which is completely devoid of graciousness, the altarpiece of the chapel reveals all the elegance of its new structure.
Church of São Francisco
Its interior is richly decorated, with focus on the original furniture from the 18th century.
Clérigos Church and Tower
The tower which rounds off the west side of the building is one of the masterpieces of Nicolau Nasoni, being considered the most iconic landmark of the city.

PORTO OF THE PEOPLE
The historic Porto we wish to highlight on this tour contemplates a human dimension that is equally significant. Its trademark is its people: the crowds at the Bolhão Market, the patrons of cosmopolitan cafes, vintage delis and renowned bookstores.
Highlights:
Bolhão Market
This is one of the most emblematic markets in Porto and in Portugal. The building exhibits a monumentality which is typical of neoclassical architecture. The market is geared towards the selling of fresh food but sells nearly everything.
"A Pérola do Bolhão"
Traditional delicatessen founded in 1917. Here you can find cheeses, like queijo da serra, a respected selection of Portuguese sausages, an extensive variety of dried and caramelized fruits, as well as a good range of wines and regional biscuits.
"A Confeitaria do Bolhão"
Founded in 1896, this confectionary continues to provide sweet treats of the past.
Café Majestic
Inaugurated on December 17, 1921, with its name and ambiance evoking the Parisian chic, this coffee shop has since then been associated with a certain type of distinguished clientele. To this day it continues to be a preferred venue for poetry recitals, piano concerts, painting exhibitions and book releases.
Lello & Irmãos Bookstore
Ranking among the top ten countries, regions and cities to visit in 2011, Lello is considered the third best bookstore in the world.
“Portuguese Life”
Climbing the elegant interior staircase, one discovers the store which recovered vintage Portuguese brands and products of the best quality. This was the first Portuguese shop to be included in the Retail Store Directory of Wallpaper magazine, where it features since 2010.

VILA DO CONDE: THE ROMANESQUE
Vila do Conde preserves authentic examples of Romanesque and 1500s architecture, with its streets contributing to the memory of those times.

Chuch of the Convent of Santa Clara
Construction on the church began in 1318. The structure consists of a single Latin cross nave, with a large transept.
Church of São João Baptista | Main Church of Vila do Conde
This late-Gothic building underwent a fundamental development in 1502, with the passage through the village of King D. Manuel, who defined the layout of the plans, awarded a grant for its construction and created a tax.
Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Socorro
Built over a massif rock, the Chapel presents a peculiar architecture, with a square plan covered by a dome.
Royal Customs and 16th century ship
The replica of a 16th century ship gives an invaluable contribution to the project of rehabilitation of the Royal Customs House and the Nautical Museum, dedicated to the tradition of Shipbuilding in Vila do Conde.
